Welcome! Karl Edwards Studio Illustration + Fine Art

Hi! I’m Karl Edwards. I am an illustrator and painter. Welcome to my studio. My door is always open. If you have questions or project ideas, I encourage you to just pick up the phone or drop me an email. I want to hear from you!

I’ve been painting animals for over thirty years. As a kid, I grew up with dogs and cats. I raised lizards and snakes. I had a pet white rat named Sneaky Leaks. Those familiar with rats will understand. I raised a squirrel monkey and studied bats, hawks and kangaroo rats. In the ’70s, I attended art school at the California College of Art and Crafts, (they’ve since dropped the Crafts from their name,) and graduated with a BFA in Drawing in 1976.

In addition to my realistic work, I am a humorous illustrator. Humor is very important to me. I see the world through the eyes of a cartoonist, meaning life’s absurdities are a bit more obvious and pronounced. Cartoons are a way to visually translate ironic twists that make life interesting and funny. I prefer to use animals to tell my stories. In my opinion, they make better characters. Also, I don’t have to worry about issues of gender, race or ethnicity that are associated with drawing people. I have illustrated many books for children over the years, and have plans to produce several volumes of original illustrated stories for kids and grown-ups in the coming year.

Recently, I began offering custom pet portraits and have clients all over the US and Europe. My portraits were featured in the 2010 December issue of The BARk Magazine.

Most want a special remembrance of the animals that bring a lot of joy into their daily lives. Some are searching for a meaningful, personal gift.

Every animal has a special story. My challenge is to not only create a good likeness, but also capture the unique personality of each animal. Portraits by nature are about the individual. In the coming weeks, I will share the stories of each of the animals I’ve come to know over the past year and their relationships to the people that love them.

I’ve learned a lot about agility competitions, hunt and field trials, show dogs and therapy dogs. I’ve also learned about devastating diseases that tend to strike certain breeds and the incredible therapies people have developed to provide comfort and better quality of life. I’ve learned about the astounding intelligence and powerful instincts that drive behaviors to track scents, point, retrieve, run or pull. I’ve come to more deeply appreciate the sixth sense quality of the bond between animals and people.

Not every one can afford a custom pet portrait, so I recently opened a poster gallery and online store with reasonably priced gifts and apparel. Now, I can offer something to suit every budget.
