Chapbooks were small, cheap, early nineteenth century publications that contained religious tracts, political treatises, songs, and other short texts.
The printing and the paper was of poor quality and marketed for the marginally literate class of consumers. Most of the chapbooks were illustrated with relatively crude woodcuts that were poorly registered with simple flat color.
But I like ‘em. Here are some examples of new work inspired by this strong graphic style. Am I going in a good direction? Let me know what you think.
